Azadirachtin <b>prevents young larvae from molting<\/b> and <b>reduces the fertility of adult females<\/b>. The solution therefore protects a tree that is still functional\u2014one capable of circulating sap and distributing the insecticide. In an ash tree whose vascular channels are already destroyed, the active ingredient cannot reach any part of the tree. Treating several neighboring ash trees at the same time also helps <b>slow the spread throughout a neighborhood<\/b>\u2014an approach that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foretprivee.ca\/je-protege-ma-foret\/maladies-et-epidemie-dinsectes\/agrile-du-frene\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Quebec Federation of Forest Producers<\/a> also applies to private woodlots.<\/p><p>Injections must be administered by a trained applicator during the growing season and repeated as long as the outbreak is active in the area.<\/p><h2><b>Regulations, permits, and grants: Don&#8217;t skip this step<\/b><\/h2><p>Cutting down an ash tree is almost never permitted without authorization in Quebec. Each municipality regulates the process through bylaw, and many cities require a permit even before the first cut is made. Longueuil, for example, maintains a <a href=\"https:\/\/www3.longueuil.quebec\/fr\/programme-aide-frenes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">financial assistance program for the removal of ash trees<\/a> on private properties. For its part, Quebec City is documenting the extent of the emerald ash borer\u2019s impact on its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ville.quebec.qc.ca\/citoyens\/environnement\/arbres-plantes\/insectes-et-maladies\/agrile-frene\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">urban forest<\/a>. Always check the program in effect for the current year before planning any work, as funding allocations and eligibility criteria are subject to change.<\/p><h2><b>The cut timber does not leave the restricted area<\/b><\/h2><p>This is the most common mistake\u2014and the one with the most serious consequences. The pest is primarily spread through logs and firewood transported by humans. The CFIA prohibits the movement of ash products and firewood out of a <a href=\"https:\/\/inspection.canada.ca\/fr\/protection-vegetaux\/phytoravageurs-plantes-envahissantes\/directives\/produits-forestiers\/03-08\/zones-reglementees\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">regulated area<\/a> without prior authorization, including for private use such as taking them to a cabin or campground. In April 2026, the CFIA announced an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/fr\/agence-inspection-aliments\/nouvelles\/2026\/04\/elargissement-de-la-zone-reglementee-a-legard-de-lagrile-du-frene-au-quebec-et-en-nouvelle-ecosse.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">expansion of the regulated zone<\/a>, specifically targeting the Bonaventure and Charlevoix-Est RCMs as well as the city of La Tuque. A tree care contractor must manage tree trimmings in accordance with these rules: this is a part of the job that the property owner doesn\u2019t see.<\/p><h2><b>A Realistic Plan for a Homeowner<\/b><\/h2><ul><li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Identify your ash trees.<\/b> Many homeowners are unaware that they have one.
