How do you remove a stump from a tree?

The mechanical method

• Pulling out: This is a dedicated method for small stumps that can be pulled out quickly. However, you risk lifting the ground and damaging the surrounding lawn, plants and paths. It consists of violently uprooting the stump with a winch and chains attached around and below it.
• Grinding: Grinding consists of reducing the stump to chips using a grinder. Wearing protective clothing is imperative in order to avoid bark and pieces of wood being projected.
• Debitage: unlike crushing, the stump will not be chipped, but gradually debited using an ax and a grinder. The debitage is suitable for a small to medium-sized stump.
• Burning: This method involves pouring flammable liquid on the stump and setting it on fire to reduce it to ashes. The operation can take several hours, depending on the size and humidity of the stump. Its advantage is that the soil will be automatically fertilized by the ashes.

The decomposition method

This method consists of using specific products to devitalize the stump and accelerate its decomposition. Be careful, chemicals are not recommended, since they risk contaminating your entire land. This method is inexpensive, but time consuming.

You can wait several months before getting the expected results. The main methods are:

• Light Deprivation: Plants need sunlight to grow properly. Cover the stump with a dark tarp that you will have previously pierced in different places. These holes will be used to water the stump abundantly for weeks. Fungi will quickly proliferate, which will accelerate the rotting of the stump;
• The use of natural products: drill holes in the stump and introduce hard cheese. It will attract parasites and worms which will quickly attack the wood. You will see that the stump will start to rot and it will be easy for you to remove it.
